- Killing Spree On PTR: Combat At Its Peak
Shadow dance took a hit on PTR with the nerf of backstab glyph (extend rupture duration, what hell?). I understand Blizzard is trying to tone down burst damage, but rogue burst damage is already 2nd tier, and our survivability is the worst among all DPS classes. Nerfing the burst damage of a spec that even Neilyo-kun couldn't master? It is certainly a step in the wrong direction if they are trying to make shadow dance more popular. Mutilate/prep gained tremendous poison damage on top of a solid glyph for mutilate, while the backstab glyph is now completely useless.
The one spec I did have fun playing on PTR, is 18/51/2 killing spree. I took 3/3 vile poison over 3/5 relentless, rest of it is the standard 15/51/5 spec. Combat already has excellent energy generation and the extra poison damage is huge for killing sprees, when the poison proc rate sits at 93% with 2.6 sinister strikes. Fist/dagger is probably the best choice thanks to prey on the weak. With a mere 143 DPS MH fist wound poison, a 156 DPS 1.8 OH dagger crippling poison, I was doing 10000+ killing spree's. What if you swap in a 2.6 weapon with wound poison during the killing spree?
With 3500AP, 156 DPS 2.6 Weapons x 2. Killing spree is not normalized, so we are talking about:
Physical Damage: (156*2.6+3500/14*2.6)*1.75*5*1.2=11084 damage before crits Poison Damage: 445*0.93*10*1.2=4966 damage before crits
And during the 2.5 second window, you can expect at least two rounds of white attacks plus an extra sinister strike. Factor in nearly 40% crit and prey on the weak, it is easily 20K+ damage before mitigation, and 10000+ even on plates in resilience gear. Throw in an eviscerate powered by improved eviscerate + aggression, and we have:
Cheap Shot (60 energy) -> White Attack -> Sinister Strike (40 energy) -> Killing Spree -> Sinister Strike (40 energy) During Killing Spree -> White Attack -> Eviscerate (35 Energy)
Not dead? I got AR/BF/SND right after. Of course this would only work against stationary targets, but still a lot of fun to simply overpower people with raw damage, something other classes have been doing to us for a while now.
20000+ damage in 4 seconds? It is ironic combat now has the best burst of all rogue specs. Unfortunately the damage goes down dramatically when your killing spree hits more than one target. Blade flurry helps to a degree but you still lose half of your poison damages. Killing Spree is also very unreliable against moving targets. Say you pop blade flurry then killing spree a hunter and his pet, the hunter disengages, you pretty much waste the entire killing spree on his pet.
Having said that, killing spree itself is on a 1.25 minute cooldown with glyph. I really see this as rogue's premier 2v2 spec. You burst with killing spree + trick of trade + engineering trinket and your healer's nukes, if the target doesn't die you get behind pillars and play the gouge/shiv keep away game until it comes back up again. I don't know if it has enough survivability/mobility for 3v3 or 5v5, but I can see it working in the right comp as well. You will probably need a warlock who can draw aggro (come 3.1, a destruction/demo hybrid should be very hard to kill yet a world of burst if left alone), and your killing spree is the nuke to finish people off.
Tried AR/prep and I still don't like it. Hemo just doesn't do enough damage even with AR up, and your survivability outside of stuns is actually worse than mutilate/prep (deadened nerve + quick recovery makes a big difference). Mobility is not that much better than mutilate/prep either. Mutilate/prep is probably still the most well-rounded spec, but I just don't believe it can compete with the top dogs. The peak potential of this spec is probably behind us and will never be reached again.
I can see 27/0/44 become the go-to spec if they buff hemo. Right now with 93% chance to apply wound poison, hemo / sinister are not as bad as before. Perhaps the hemo debuff should affect rupture? Or even allow rupture/garrote to crit (dot critting talents seem to be the rage those days, I think we will get our own)?
